Halloween Hot Dog Mummies

Halloween hot dog mummies with edible eyes and puff pastry wrappings are a great way to get kids involved in preparing a Halloween party. Use store-bought ingredients to ensure that the process is all fun and no fuss.

With dough that mimics tattered mummy wrappings and sugar eyes to bring them to life, “mummified” snacks are as silly and festive as they are satisfying. The spooky cousin to traditional pigs-in-a-blanket, these are a bit bigger and have a whole lot more personality, but the taste profile is much the same. Buttery dough wrapped around salty meat makes for an addictive treat that can serve as the main dish on the kid’s table (and a snack for the adults).

While the rest of this recipe can be found at your supermarket, you might have to go a little further afield for googly eyes. Check out the baking section at a crafts store or go online to somewhere like Amazon to find a bag.

We love these as post-trick-or-treat sustenance or a final touch to a Halloween party spread. Even if you’re tired from collecting candy door to door, you can have these on the table in less than 30 minutes — and they’re so easy, you could cook them while still in  costume!

Halloween Hot Dog Mummies

1. Preheat your oven to 290°C (550°F).

Open your puff pastry and cut or tear into 1/2 centimeter thick strips lengthwise.

2. Wrap strips around hot dogs, mimicking the cloth bandages on a mummy.

The more irregular, the better!

3. Tip: Each "mummy" uses roughly 1/8 sheet of puff pastry.

4. Place wrapped hot dogs on a lined baking sheet — we used a nonstick baking mat, but parchment paper also works well — and bake until golden brown, about 5 minutes.

Turn once for an even bake.

5. Tip: We cooked 4 hot dogs at a time, but you could possibly cook more than that, depending on the size of your baking sheet.

Just make sure your hot dogs aren’t touching or the puff pastry won’t get crispy.

6. Remove from the oven using a pizza peel and/or heat-resistant gloves.

Once slightly cool, top with edible googly eyes.

7. Serve along with your favourite dipping sauces! We love the classics and serve these with ketchup and mustard.
